LG Fashion Week flashes to style future with fall-winter linesSumptuous style and fashion-forward looks may be the focus on the runway, but any designer can tell you the work is far from over once the models have left the catwalk.

Some of the country's leading talents are preparing to roll out their meticulously crafted creations at Toronto's LG Fashion Week, hoping to attract attention and get fashionistas to open their wallets in the months to come for items from their fall and winter collections.

So it seems fitting that the Fashion Design Council of Canada, which organizes the semi-annual event, has set the "industry" aspect of style square in their sights. The 24th season beginning Monday at Heritage Court at Exhibition Place has been appropriately dubbed "The Business of Fashion."

"I've always had darling themes like `Show Love,' — fun themes," FDCC president Robin Kay said in an interview. "After this many seasons, our focus is on the designers refining the business of fashion and selling their collections properly.

"That has to happen in this business as it does in any other business."Kay said buyers from every major Canadian city are confirmed for the event. Fashion week attendees will be able to check out an on-site marketplace environment. The space will give designers an opportunity to hang one or two pieces for close-up viewing, she said.

A mobile aspect of the event introduced last season will be taken one step further with e-commerce. Kay said about 50 garments from 20 to 30 designers will carry a universal hang tag. A portion of the tag will be scannable for smartphones, taking individuals to a page to describe how they can purchase the item and delivery date.

"It can certainly provide a designer — and a young designer — who may not have a terrific amount of doors (open to the them) the opportunity to cut and sew another 20 or 30 of a piece that they know has done well for them," said Kay. "It will provide an opportunity for a designer to get feedback on a piece of clothing if it is purchased."

Dozens of shows will roll out over five days delivering the usual slate of fresh faces and style stalwarts.

Luxury retailer Holt Renfrew will open the week with "Can’t Live Without Canadian Fashion,” offering samples of notable brands and labels including Canada Goose, Lida Baday and Jeremy Laing. Joining them on opening night are Izzy Camilleri and Adrian Mainella presenting the latest from their collaborative label IZMA, which features sustainable wild furs. Brother-and-sister team Jamil and Alia Juma will close out Day 1 with looks from their JUMA line.

The week will feature rising talents such as Amanda Lew Kee, Diepo and Krane joining high-profile homegrown staples such as womenswear from David Dixon, Denis Gagnon and Pink Tartan, affordable apparel from Joe Fresh Style and menswear from sportswear label Bustle. Jay Manuel of "America's Next Top Model" fame promises surprises when he debuts his designs from Attitude Jay Manuel, the rebranded private label collection for Sears Canada.

After several seasons showing his collections off-site, Sunny Fong will bring his VAWK label to the Fashion Week runway. Fong said this will be his first presentation on-site since showing his winning finale collection for the TV design competition series "Project Runway Canada."

"There's more seats and there's more eyes, and this way, we can have our fans that have never been able to come to the show come and still attract the industry as well," he said in an interview.
